More than one way to correct vision with a laser
Laser vision correction is a family of procedures that reshape the cornea to correct refractive errors. The right technique depends on your prescription, corneal thickness and shape, eye health and lifestyle.
Common laser techniques
- LASIK – a thin corneal flap is created and the underlying tissue is reshaped
- Surface procedures (PRK / LASEK) – the cornea is reshaped from the surface without a flap; may suit thinner corneas
- Small-incision lenticule techniques – tissue is removed through a small incision, where suitable
Availability of specific techniques and their suitability for you will be discussed during your consultation.
Choosing the right procedure
A thorough pre-operative evaluation – including corneal mapping and measurement of corneal thickness – helps determine which technique, if any, is appropriate. In some patients, lens-based refractive options may be more suitable than laser.
