What is refractive eye surgery?
Refractive eye surgery includes procedures designed to correct common vision errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, potentially reducing dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
Common refractive errors
- Myopia (short-sightedness) – distant objects appear blurred
- Hyperopia (long-sightedness) – near objects are harder to focus on
- Astigmatism – uneven curvature causes blurred or distorted vision at all distances
Types of refractive procedures
Refractive correction can be achieved by reshaping the cornea with a laser (such as LASIK and surface procedures) or, in selected patients, with lens-based procedures such as implantable lenses. The choice depends on your prescription, corneal health and age.
Evaluation comes first
Not every patient is a suitable candidate for refractive surgery. A detailed eye examination and assessment of corneal health, vision stability and overall eye health are important before deciding on treatment. Dr. Kapur will explain the options that are appropriate for you, along with their expected benefits and limitations.
